Ember Charcoal Grill is a new café with a steakhouse concept eatery, located in Ang Mo Kio. Like its name suggests, the café uses charcoal to grill its steaks and they pride themselves for serving high quality meat at really affordable pricing!
Located in a quaint neighbourhood below a HDB block, alfresco dining at the steakhouse gives off a laidback vibe, and its the perfect location for a meal with friends after work or even for a nice weekend brunch. The warm lighting in the steakhouse gives off a really warm and comfortable dining experience as well.
Ember Charcoal Grill has an extensive menu ranging grilled meats to brunch options (only available on weekends/PH from 10am to 5pm), so there is definitely an option for everyone! Here's what we tried at the cafe:)
For starters, we had Ember's Truffle Fries ($7.90) , Fried Broccoli ($6.90) and Korean Spiced Crispy Pork Belly Bites ($9.90). To say we were blown away was an understatement.
First on the list are the truffle fries, which was one of the best we've had in Singapore. The fries were seasoned to perfection with an even coat of truffle oil and a generous amount of grana padano (similar to parmesan but lighter on the palette). The fragrance of the truffle flavour was prominent in each bite. With an affordable pricing below $10, this dish is a must-try at the café!
Each broccoli was fried to perfection and without having a cloying oil taste. Their fried broccoli were extremely juicy with the flavours elevated by a unique seasoning of honey and smoked paprika. This is highly recommended for sweet and savoury lovers!
Last but not the least, we had their Korean Spiced Crispy Pork Belly Bites. Unlike most places which tend to serve overly dry or hard fried pork belly, we were pleasantly surprised upon tasting this dish. Each individual piece of pork belly had a crisp outer layer while retaining its succulence. The kick from the Korean spices complimented the pork belly perfectly which made every bite highly addicting. We'd definitely recommend this for anyone who loves pork belly as much as we do!
For mains, we opted for a steak as we were at a steakhouse, and we decided on the Silverfin GrassFed Striploin ($25.90). The dish came with an option of 1 sauce (Black pepper, Miso-kombu or Bordelaise) and 2 side dishes, in which we chose fries, and butter spinach with Miso-kombu as our sauce.
The steak was well-seasoned with hints of smokiness from the charcoal, a perfect match with the savouriness and earthiness from the miso-kombu sauce! Our only gripe was that the steak was slightly overcooked (for a medium) to our liking, but due to the high quality of the meat, the steak was still very tender.
Ending our meal with a sweet touch, we had their Creme Brûlée Waffle ($15.90). The sugar atop the waffles was torched to a crisp golden brown and each bite of the waffle was encased with caramelised sugar. However, we would have preferred for the custard to be slightly more chilled, as it would have complimented the warm waffles way better (could possibly be blamed on us as we took a while before diving into it).
In short, Ember Charcoal Grill is definitely a café I'd revisit with my friends and family. With the warm and welcoming ambience paired with their amazing food at an affordable pricing, this is definitely not the last time that I'll be visiting!
